"When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do "

-  Matthew 9:12 (NLT)

A person is considered healthy when their body parts and organs function properly. When any part of the body fails to operate as it should, we classify that individual as sick and, therefore, unhealthy. Typically, a sick person seeks treatment from a physician. Once they receive the proper care and regain their health, we say they have been healed.

Healing is the process of restoring health to the body, enabling it to function as intended. God has established a broad spectrum of healing methods. On one end lies healing through science, such as medicine, and on the other end is healing through the supernatural works of God, manifested in miracles. Both forms of healing complement one another, working hand in hand to restore health.

God, the Creator of all, acknowledges the importance of medical science and the work of healthcare practitioners. In Jeremiah 8:22 (NLT), the question is posed: “Is there no medicine in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why is there no healing for the wounds of my people?” Jesus Himself recognized the need for physicians in Matthew 9:12, saying, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”

Jesus is the ultimate Physician, dedicated to the ministry of healing.

Medicine was also utilized in the healing of Hezekiah, as noted in Isaiah 38:21: “Isaiah had said to Hezekiah’s servants, ‘Make an ointment from figs and spread it over the boil, and Hezekiah will recover.’” Additionally, Ezekiel 47:12 speaks of a tree whose leaves are used for healing. A knowledgeable pharmacist will confirm that many medicines derive from plant extracts.

At the higher end of the healing spectrum lies miraculous healing. This form of healing is often sought when medical interventions have failed to resolve a health issue. The story of the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:25-34 exemplifies the pursuit of divine healing when all else had been tried. Similarly, in Acts 19:12, handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul’s skin were used to heal people of their ailments.

In Luke 4:23, Jesus remarked, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’” Jesus is the ultimate Physician, dedicated to the ministry of healing. Whether through medical intervention or miraculous works, He is actively involved in restoring health, demonstrating His healing power through those He chooses.

Song of Worship

  The great Physician now is near,

the sympathizing Jesus;

He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,

oh! hear the voice of Jesus

Sweetest note in seraph song,

sweetest name on mortal tongue;

sweetest carol ever sung,

Jesus, blessed Jesus.

Prayer -  Dear Lord, everywhere I am sick and unhealthy, let me receive your healing, either through medicine or your divine power in Jesus’ name. Amen.
