"Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name"
- Genesis 2:19 (NKJV)
Before the fall, man operated in two major categories: kingship and fellowship. Kingship involved man exercising his God-given authority over God’s creation, while fellowship represented the intimate relationship he shared with God. This experience was uniquely present in the Garden of Eden, where God's presence dwelled.
The foundation for kingship was established when God created man in His image and likeness, as recorded in Genesis 1:26, and blessed him in Genesis 1:28. Within that blessing was the mandate to dominate the works of God’s creation. It was through this dominion mandate that man demonstrated his kingship.
In Genesis 2:19, we see man exercising his kingship when he named all the animals that God created. “Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.”
Man operated in two major categories: kingship and fellowship.
Man enjoyed fellowship with God, a close and intimate level of friendship. In the cool of the day, God would walk around the garden to commune with man (Genesis 3:8a). Such was the depth of friendship that God was present to witness the naming of the animals. The EASY version of Genesis 1:29 records, “God wanted to know what names the man would call them.”
Unfortunately, man lost these privileges of kingship and fellowship after succumbing to temptation, resulting in separation from the presence of God. The good news, however, is that when we give our lives to Christ, these privileges are restored to us. We regain the ability to once again demonstrate kingship with God and enjoy fellowship with Him once more.
When we face challenging situations that seek to dominate us and deny us fellowship with God, we can create an atmosphere akin to Eden, wherein we exercise kingship and enjoy fellowship.
God enthrones Himself in the praises of His people. When we praise and worship Him, we invite His presence. Just as God was present with Adam, we can name our situations and declare the authority we possess. Since we share the same spirit of God (Romans 8:11), who watches over His word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12), and whose words do not return empty but accomplish the purpose for which He sent it (Isaiah 55:11), then surely our situations will change in accordance with our kingly declaration, and we will have God’s presence to support our proclamations.
Go on, exercise your Kingship! And embrace the fellowship that God’s presence has for you today!
