The Art of Holy Boasting

June 6, 2024

Read 1 Samuel 17:45-47

The story of David and Goliath illustrates a powerful example of boasting in the Lord. David's confidence was not in his own strength or abilities but in the power and faithfulness of God. Through his boldness and faith we are provided with a profound lesson on how we should face our giants—by boasting about our mighty God.

David, a young shepherd, faced Goliath, a giant warrior who had terrorized the Israelites army. While others saw an invincible enemy, David saw an opportunity to demonstrate God's power and faithfulness. His confidence came from past experiences where God had delivered him from a lion and a bear, he was confident God would deliver him from Goliath as well.

David’s certainty stemmed from his past experiences with God. He had experienced God's deliverance firsthand, which strengthened his faith. In 1 Samuel 17:37, David said, " The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Remembering God's past faithfulness fuels our confidence to boast in Him while engaging current battles.

David didn't just silently hope for victory; he boldly declared it. He told Goliath exactly what God was going to do, showing his unwavering faith in God's power. When we face challenges, we should boldly declare God's promises and power, speaking life and faith to our situations.

David understood that the battle was not his to fight but the Lord's. He proclaimed in 1 Samuel 17:47, " Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands." Recognizing that our battles belong to God alters our perspective from sheer defeat, moving up from a place of fear to that of faith.

In Applying This in Our Lives We should;

Recall Past Victories:

Take time to remember and recount the times God has delivered you in the past. These testimonies build faith and remind you of God's faithfulness.

Declare God's Promises:

Speak God’s promises over your life and situation. Boldly declare His power and faithfulness, just as David did before Goliath.

Trust God's Sovereignty:

Acknowledge that the battle belongs to the Lord. Surrender your struggles to Him and trust that He will fight for you.

David's encounter with Goliath teaches us the importance of boasting in God's power and faithfulness. By recalling God's past deliverances while boldly declaring His promises, and trusting in His sovereignty, we can face any giant confidently and return victorious. Let us therefore boast in the Lord at all times, knowing that He is mighty to save and deliver from any situation posing as a giant in our lives.

Song of Worship

I will boast, in Christ alone

His righteousness

And not my own

I will cling to Christ my hope

His mercy reigns

Now and forever

Prayer - Dear Lord, we thank You for Your faithfulness and power. Like David, help us to remember Your past victories in our lives and to boldly declare Your promises over our current situations. We trust that the battles we face are Yours and that You are mighty to save. Empower us to boast about Your greatness and to live in the confidence of Your unfailing love and power. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
