The Potency of Fasting

September 11, 2024

“'Even now,'” says the Lord, turn and come to Me with all your heart in genuine repentance, With fasting and weeping and mourning until every barrier is removed and the broken fellowship is restored.”

 - Joel 2:12 (AMP)

Yesterday, we delved into the mystery of fasting and how it gives us access to the power of The Spirit. Today, we will explore the potency of fasting and then examine what we can expect to happen when we engage the power of The Spirit through fasting. Fasting is powerful because fasting is humbling. Through His eyes, God views fasting as man’s expression of humility (1 Kings 21: 27-29). Fasting is also inflicting (Galatians 5:17). It weakens the body and puts the body under subjection to strengthen connectivity to The Spirit.

What can we expect to see when we engage in fasting? First, the potency of fasting produces the performance of prophecies and promises. If there is a promise that we want to be activated on time, we must be intentional about laying hold of that promise and bringing it into the physical realm by fasting and prayer. Daniel 9:2 contains the prophecy of Jeremiah about the restoration of Jerusalem. In verse 3, Daniel “directed His attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting” to bring that prophecy spoken over Jerusalem to pass.

Fasting is potent because it accelerates the manifestation of God’s promises in our lives.

Fasting is thus potent because it accelerates the manifestation of God’s promises in our lives. Fasting is the conduit that translates prophetic words hanging over our lives into tangible testimonies. Do you still have prophecies awaiting expression in your life? Continue to engage in fasting until you see the physical evidence of those promises in your life.

Second, fasting is potent because it brings about deliverance from the judgement of God, deliverance from our adversaries and deliverance from our flesh. In Jonah 3:4-10, the people of Nineveh declared a fast that resulted in their deliverance from God’s pending wrath and judgement. God had to change His mind about what He intended to do to them because of their fast. May every pending judgement on our lives be removed and overturned as we engage in this fasting. Fasting also brings about deliverance from the wrath of our enemies. In the book of Esther, we see how Esther’s fast disrupted the wicked plot of Haman. Fasting can silence the works and devices of our adversaries.

Furthermore, fasting has the potency to deliver us from demonic oppression. In Matthew 17:21, Jesus told His disciples to add fasting to their prayer after unsuccessful attempts to cast out a demon from a boy. There is also deliverance from the flesh when we fast. This speaks to deliverance from the control of our sinful nature and desires.

Finally, the potency of fasting can lead to restoration. In Joel 2:12, 25, God restored everything they lost after they fasted. May we receive total restoration and deliverance as we continue to wait upon The Lord in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer - Dear Lord, as I continue to seek your face through fasting, may I receive tangible manifestations of every promise and prophecy hanging over my life. Total and complete deliverance and restoration is my portion as I faithfully engage in this fast. In Jesus name – Amen.
