The Triumphs of Mercy

July 2, 2024

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

 Psalm 136:1

Mercy is one of the key attributes of God. Beyond that it is a key aspect of our relationship with Him. Therefore, in today’s devotional, let us look a three ways mercy prevails for good in the life of a believer.

The Mercy of God is triumphs over judgment! James 2:13. We see in Romans 3:23 that all have sinned, thus the need for mercy. Similarly, Romans 6:23 explains that the consequence of sin is death, however through the mercy of God, we receive the free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus. In 2 Samuel 24:14, David chooses to fall into the hand of the Lord rather than the hand of men. David did this because he recognized the greatness of God’s mercies.

Secondly, mercy prevails over time! As seen in Ecclesiastics 3:1, man has limited time for everything as exemplified in Psalm 136:1, but the mercy of God endures forever. Therefore, if we do not undermine God’s mercy, we must not lose hope. The mercy of God brought about Sarah’s conception as recorded in Genesis 21:1. As long a man can find mercy, time is not an issue, because where time stops, mercy takes over.

Lastly, mercy prevails over restrictions or helplessness. Consequently, in the journey of life, when things seem to be rough, it may suggest that mercy is lacking in our lives, thus we must come before the throne of grace to obtain mercy as taught in Hebrews 4:16.  In the Old Testament, only the High Priest could obtain mercy on behalf of himself and the people( Leviticus 16), but as a result of Christ’s death (Matt 27:50-51) and because the veil was torn, we are able to go into the holy of holies by ourselves to obtain mercy by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Mercy is always available to help us, and we must keep in mind that we can seek God’s mercy in all things—great or small... even in the mundane. In Daniel 2:18, Daniel obtained mercy to be able to interpret the dream of his boss, Nebuchadnezzar. Mercy extends beyond sinners; it includes receiving help for any need. When we receive mercy, grace and divine assistance are sure to follow.

We provoke mercy first through incense—by entering His presence with prayers of thanksgiving and worship (see Psalms141:2 and Psalm 92:5). Secondly, we enter by the blood (Ephesians 2:13), and finally, we make our plea for mercy.
