The Wisdom and Power of Christ I

December 28, 2024

For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

- 1 Cor 1:22-25 (NKJV)

Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment, while power is the ability to act effectively. In our daily lives, we yearn for both wisdom and power to navigate challenges. James 1:5 states that anyone who lacks wisdom should ask of God, who gives generously and without reproach. This promise invites us to seek His guidance, knowing He is always ready to impart wisdom to those who earnestly desire it.

In Acts 3:2, we see Peter activating the power of God to help the lame man at the gate. This illustrates a profound truth: everything we aspire to accomplish in life requires power. Whether it’s achieving good health, being a loving spouse, raising children, or excelling in our work, we need divine empowerment. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us, "But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth." This power extends to every area of life where we seek to flourish.

The first verse of our main text makes a profound statement: "For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom." Paul highlights a significant cultural distinction: the Jews were impressed by signs and wonders, while the Greeks valued logic and astuteness. The Jews’ longing for miraculous signs was rooted in their history, as God brought them out of Egypt with His mighty power (Deuteronomy 26:8). On the other hand, the Greeks, influenced by philosophical traditions, were captivated by intellectual debates (Acts 17:18-21).

Paul boldly declares in 1 Corinthians 1:23, "But we preach Christ crucified." This powerful statement shifts our focus from the pursuit of signs or human wisdom to the centrality of Christ in our lives. Whether we seek miracles or profound truths, what we truly long for is Christ (Colossians 2:9). He embodies the answer to every question, the solution to every problem, and the fulfillment of every desire. Christ is the wisdom of God and His power.

To access the wisdom and power of Christ, we must first be called (1 Corinthians 1:24). We must believe in Christ crucified—acknowledging that He was born, died for our sins, was buried, and resurrected on the third day. This belief is the foundation of our faith and the gateway to experiencing His wisdom and power.

As we walk in faith and seek a deeper relationship with Christ, we open ourselves to His transformative influence. Let us anchor our hearts and minds in Him, the ultimate source of strength and enlightenment.

Prayer -  Dear Lord, grant me the grace to praise You like a little child, without care or concern, so that my praise is perfected, You ordain strength to silence my adversaries, the enemy and the avenger so that I enjoy rest in Jesus’ name, Amen.
