“For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.”

Romans 7:22 (NKJV)

As believers, we often find ourselves in Paul’s shoes—caught between a heart that loves God and habits that don’t reflect Him. In Romans 7:22, Paul acknowledges that his inward man—his born-again spirit—delights in the law of God. He doesn’t want to steal. He doesn’t want to sin. Sound familiar?

You love Jesus. You desire righteousness. Yet, there’s still a battle. Why?

Desire is Not Enough . The missing link is the mind. Let’s connect the dots between Romans 7 and Psalm 1:2:

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:2 (NKJV)

Who’s delighting in the law of the Lord here? The inward man—same as in Romans 7.

But unlike Romans 7, Psalm 1 doesn’t stop at delight. It adds something crucial: Meditation.

And in His law he meditates day and night.” That’s what’s missing from Romans 7.

You can delight in your spirit all you want, but if you don’t meditate on God’s Word, your mind will continue to act like a stranger to your spirit. The result? Frustration. Inconsistency. Failure. Meditation is Mind Renewal.

Romans 12:2 (NKJV) tells us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

That’s not a one-time event. It’s a process. A discipline. A practice.

Paul struggled in Romans 7 because he delighted in God’s law but hadn’t yet meditated enough to renew his thinking.

Until the mind is renewed, the spirit will be willing, but the flesh will keep winning.

How Do I Build New Thoughts?

Romans 8:5 (NLT) gives us the next clue:

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.”

It’s not just about spiritual warfare or deliverance-those have their place.

But the real work is in the mind. Whoever dominates your thoughts controls your actions.

So let your thinking be dominated by what the Spirit loves.

The Cycle of Mind Renewal:

You don’t break strongholds by shouting louder—you break them by building stronger thoughts.

Here’s the framework:

Receive → Think → Do → Repeat

  • Receive the Word of God. Listen. Read. Hear the truth.
  • Think about it. Meditate day and night. Let it dwell richly.
  • Do the Word. Put it into action. Practice until it becomes your nature.
  • Repeat consistently until it forms new mental and spiritual networks.

This is how you build new trees in your mind—thoughts that bear fruit in your life.

Even science confirms it: repeating a thought-action loop for 21 days begins to form a new neural network. Spiritually, this aligns with the biblical call to meditate continually.

You don’t get free just by casting out a demon. You stay free by renewing your mind.

You don’t win by just trying harder. You win by thinking higher.

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart…”

— Luke 6:45 (NIV)

No Longer Slaves

Song by Bethel Music

Prayer – Father, thank You for giving me a spirit that delights in Your ways. Now, help me build new thoughts that align with Your truth. Teach me to meditate day and night, to renew my mind and walk fully of what You’ve called me to be.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
