“ Is not this the carpenter, Mary’s son, the brother of James and Joses, Jude and Simon? And do not his sisters live here among us? So they turned angrily away”
– Mark 6:3 (WEY)
God is capable of healing every sickness and disease. A key part of Jesus’ earthly ministry was healing, and wherever He went, He performed healing miracles for sick and diseased people. In Matthew 9:35, the Bible records, “Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people”. God’s healing power is unlimited and ever-present, just as it was in Jesus’ earthly ministry. However, our posture and response to Him can determine whether or not we receive that healing.
The Bible records that there was a place Jesus went and did not perform as many healing miracles. This is found in Mark 6:1-6. Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth, where He grew up. He began teaching on the Sabbath, and what should have been another demonstration of the absolute healing power of God turned out to be a partial show of God’s power because of the people’s attitudes towards Jesus.
Familiarity bred contempt.
The people of Nazareth were so familiar with Jesus, having known Him as the carpenter, and Mary’s son, that they became offended by His wisdom and authority. And rather than honor Him, they questioned, disbelieved, dismissed, and ultimately rejected Him. Their familiarity bred contempt, and because of that, many withdrew from the gathering altogether. The Weymouth New Testament translations of Mark 6:3b puts it plainly “So they turned angrily away”.
The result of that atmosphere of unbelief and contempt is what the Bible captures in Mark 6:5, “Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.” It wasn’t that God’s power diminished that He couldn’t heal everyone – it was that the people’s offense, turning away in anger and disbelief disqualified them from receiving God’s healing.
When we go to God for healing (and other things), we must have the right attitude (largely gratitude), else we risk missing out on our miracle.
Song of Worship
Everywhere He went
He was doing good
Almighty Healer
He healed the leapers
When the cripples saw Him
they started walking
Everywhere He went my God was doing good
Prayer: – Dear Lord, help to let go of any contempt or offense that may stand in the way of my healing in Jesus’ name, Amen.
