“And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?
– 1 Samuel 16:1 (KJV)
Sometimes the prophetic word does not wait for our feelings to catch up, it simply instructs us to move forward. In 1 Samuel 16, Samuel was still mourning the fall of King Saul. His heart was broken. He had poured so much into Saul. But God, in His divine wisdom, interrupted Samuel’s grief with a direct instruction: “Fill your horn with oil and go.” In other words, “It is time to move on.”
God was not being insensitive to Samuel’s emotions. He was inviting him to align with the new season. Mourning has a purpose, but it must have an expiry date. In Psalm 30:5, the Bible say, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning”. If the morning has come and you are still stuck in last night’s pain, you may miss God’s next instruction and the prophetic promotion that follows!
Today’s devotional is for someone who has been stuck in regret, heartbreak, disappointment, or delay. You may have lost something important, maybe a relationship, a job, or a dream, etc, remember He always have a better plan, and for that reason, God has already moved ahead of you! He has prepared something better! Promotion does not wait for you to feel ready; it waits for your obedience. “Fill your horn with oil and go” means that the anointing for your next season is available, but you must rise from grief and take the first step forward!
Stop mourning what I’ve already moved past.
Moving on does not mean pretending the loss did not hurt. It means trusting that God still has a plan. Sometimes, like Samuel, you may feel conflicted between the past and the future. But God is not asking you to understand everything. He is asking you to trust Him enough to obey. That next step might feel heavy, but it is where your oil is waiting. Your fresh assignment, promotion, open door, and next chapter are ahead, not behind – Isa. 43:18-19.
The longer you stay stuck in what did not work, the more you delay what God is trying to do next. Today, God is saying to you, “Stop mourning what I’ve already moved past.” Your promotion, peace, and new joy are tied to your willingness to let go of the old and step into the new by faith!
Prayer – Father, thank You for Your mercy and for never leaving me stuck in the past. I acknowledge the pain of what I’ve lost, but I choose today to trust You more. I release every disappointment, failure, and regret into Your hands. Give me the courage to rise, to fill my horn with oil, and to go. I receive grace to move forward into the prophetic promotion You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
