“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
–  Genesis 1:28 (NKJV)

In our previous devotional, we looked at the concept of fruitfulness and its impediments. Today, our focus is on multiplication. To multiply is to use your skill(s) to produce more results in less time. Consider being given a job or a task that would ideally take one month to complete. To be fruitful is to complete the task within the allotted time. To multiply means speed in execution, completing that same job with the same or higher quality within two weeks.

In 1 Samuel 17:48-51, is the story of David and Goliath. In that account, the Israelites had forty days to execute judgement on the Philistines. Yet they could not. When Goliath comes out to boast, they would retreat. In some present-day cultures, the board of directors might have to set up a committee to investigate the latest boast from the enemy, and they might spend another couple of weeks to issue a statement on what to do next. David had no time for such frivolities. Forty days was too long for a man like Goliath to be making unfounded statements about his God. When David showed up, within minutes, the battle was over. That is the power of multiplication, which is achieving the same outcome in less time. It is our prayer for you today that you receive the speed, the grace for multiplication, and the ability to produce more within a shorter period.

Multiplication is about efficiency with purpose.

But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them. Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; Exodus 1:7-9 NKJV

One of the ways to operate in the dimension of multiplication is to practice using your skills more. The more you sharpen your expertise, the more you gain speed in the execution of any task at hand. In the text above, the pathway to the Israelites’ mightiness, was through multiplication. To multiply is not only to produce more but also to produce more in less time, using the skills, wisdom, and abilities God has given you. Multiplication in God’s economy is about efficiency with purpose, the application of skill to increase, and aligning your energy with His plan.

In the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30, each servant was given resources according to their ability. The ones who applied their skills quickly and wisely doubled their investment, while the one who delayed and buried the talent lost opportunity. Speed paired with skill brought multiplication while delay brought loss. God’s command to multiply challenges us to work smart, not just hard. What He has given you — your mind, your hands, your influence, your words, can achieve far more when used skillfully and efficiently. Delays, excuses, or wasted effort slow multiplication but obedience, focus and diligence accelerate it.
