But then I will win her back once again. I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her there.

Hosea 2:14 (NLT)

Our devotional today is taken from 1 Samuel 25:2-42, a story about a man called Nabal and his wife Abigail. Nabal is described as an evil man with a hard heart. In contrast, Abigail was known for her wisdom and considered a remarkable woman.  Today, we will reflect on her life and explore some principles that makes for a “wonder woman”.

The presence of a woman in the life of any man has traditionally been known to carry great influence. As seen in Genesis 2:18, 21-24. Eve influenced Adam in the garden of Eden to eat of the fruit God instructed them not to eat. Similarly in Judges 16:15, Delilah’s influence over Samson led him to disclose the secret of his strength, despite knowing her intentions. From these two examples, we see women hold a degree of power capable of influencing even the strongest of men. A wise woman however is one that uses that power positively to guide according to the will of God.

The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb. 1 Samuel 25:3 NKJV

Abigail is described as a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance- both brains and beauty. Understanding is the ability to gather information, make sense out of it and use it productively. In relationship or marriage, one essential thing Women should try to understand is their spouse. Many marital issues could be avoided through a simple understanding of one’s partner. Your husband is your subject, and you should aim to be the subject matter expert of that man.

Your husband is your subject, and you should aim to be the subject matter expert of that man.

Proverbs 24:3 NKJV says, “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.” For any home or relationship to be established, it must be grounded in understanding, without it, the foundation is shaky- like a house built on sand. To be established means that even when trouble comes, your home still stands. Wives, understand your husbands-know their moods, their likes and dislikes.

Psalm 139:14 reminds us that every woman is beautiful. Many women put great effort into looking beautiful when going out, especially for special events. But it’s just important not to neglect your appearance at home for your own husband. This is one area Abigail did not overlook, despite being married to difficult man. Most men would still desire to see their wives looking attractive-not just for occasions but in everyday life at home. There is nothing wrong with dressing well and looking good for your spouse. God has made you beautiful, but it is your responsibility to maintain and reflect that beauty.

While today’s message focuses on women, the principles apply to men as well. Do not be like Nabal, a harsh and evil man. Be compassionate, speak with kindness, love your wives, and live selflessly, as instructed in Ephesians 5:25.

It is our prayer today that the Lord would establish your home and give you peace in any area wherein there may be a storm in Jesus’s name.
