“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever”
- John 14:16 (KJV)

When Jesus left the earth, He did not leave His followers powerless or directionless. Instead, before He left, He introduced them to the One who would take over His earthly ministry, the Holy Spirit. He called Him a Comforter and Helper. In Greek, the word used is Parakletos, derived from para (nearby) and kaleo (to call). The Holy Spirit is the One called to be alongside us, not by our call, but by the call of the Father.

This call comes with a mission. The Holy Spirit has a divine assignment in our lives. He is not just a passive presence or a mysterious force. He is a Person on assignment, and He comes to us with roles that are critical to our spiritual success. Let’s explore them:

1. Our Helper: When you don’t know how to pray, what decision to make, or how to overcome a weakness, the Holy Spirit is there to help. He empowers you to do what you cannot do on your own.

2. Our Standby: He is ready, always alert, and never absent. Even when you don’t feel Him, He is present—waiting to move when you invite Him.

The Spirit’s call is to walk with you. Will you walk with Him?

3. Our Strengthener: Feeling weak or discouraged? He supplies inner strength that goes beyond your emotional or physical capacity. Isaiah 40:29 says, He gives power to the faint.

4. Our Advocate: The Holy Spirit speaks on your behalf. He pleads your case, intercedes for you, and silences the accuser.

5. Our Counsellor: He brings wisdom. He guides you into all truth and reveals the mind of God for every situation. You’ll never walk in darkness if you walk with Him.

All these functions show that we cannot live a victorious Christian life without the Holy Spirit. Even Jesus, though fully God, carried out His ministry on earth through the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38). The apostles were ineffective until the Holy Spirit came upon them. If they needed Him, so do we. Any believer trying to serve God without the help of the Spirit will suffer burnout and fall short. The Spirit’s call is to walk with you. Will you walk with Him?
