“But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.”
– Genesis 45:5 (NKJV)
Understanding dreams and purpose helps us stay aligned with what God is truly doing in our lives. While dreams are powerful, they are not always the final goal. They often reveal part of the journey, but not the full reason behind it.
Joseph had dreams in which his brothers and parents bowed before him. That picture was inspiring and full of promise. It showed elevation, honor, and influence. However, when Joseph later understood God’s plan, he realized something deeper. His purpose was not simply to be honored. It was to preserve life.
Dreams and Purpose: Knowing the Difference
The difference between a dream and a purpose is significant. A dream may show us the beautiful part of what lies ahead, but purpose reveals why God is taking us there. While a dream highlights position, a purpose explains assignment.
Joseph’s brothers bowed before him, just as he had seen, but that moment was not the main goal. The true purpose was that God used Joseph to save many people during a time of famine. The dream pointed to elevation, but the purpose pointed to service.
Why God Shows the Dream First
God often gives the dream first because it encourages us. He provides a picture that brings hope and strength. That picture helps us continue, even when the road becomes difficult.
While a dream highlights position, a purpose explains assignment.
If Joseph had only seen the hardship ahead, he might have lost heart. But the dream gave him something to hold on to. It became an anchor of faith through every challenge.
Looking for Purpose Within the Dream
As we walk in what God shows us, we need to look beyond the surface. When things begin to unfold, we can pause and ask, ‘What is the purpose here? What is God accomplishing through this?’
Dreams remind us that our lives are not only about personal success. They are about fulfilling God’s purpose and being a blessing to others.
When we understand this, we remain grounded. We can celebrate the dream while staying committed to the purpose.
