“Then God said, ‘Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures…”
– Genesis 1:20 (NKJV)
A fish appears strong in water. It glides with ease, darts with speed, and moves as if the ocean were made just for it. And in a sense, it was. The fish was created in the water and for the water.
But take that same fish out of the water and place it on dry land. Suddenly, the strength disappears. The graceful swimmer becomes helpless, gasping for life.
The problem is not the fish. The problem is the environment.
This illustrates a spiritual truth: everything that comes from a source must remain connected to that source in order to thrive.
In Genesis 1:26–27, God created humanity in His own image. That means our lives were designed to function in relationship with Him. Just as the fish depends on water, we depend on God. One of the things the devil whispers in the ears of men is the misleading idea that they do not need God.
Whether you abound or are abased, you will always need God.
Everything that comes from a source must remain connected to that source in order to thrive.
In your moment of trials, times of despair, stay connected to God. In times of abundance when life is good, remember your Source, so you can be sustained in Him. Never allow anything – persecution, delays, life’s curve balls, offense, riches, or the good things of life to take you away from God and from His presence.
When we remain connected to Him – through prayer, His Word, and daily trust – life begins to flow the way it was meant to. We have His strength, His wisdom, and HIs direction to live in His fullness.
But when people drift away from God, life begins to strain. We may still try to move forward, but something feels off – like a fish trying to breathe outside the water.
Perhaps it has been a while since you had fellowship with God, spent time in His presence or been to church.
Today is a good day to reconnect with your source – your Maker. The good news is that God never moves away from us. He patiently invites us back to the place where life truly works – close to Him.
When we reconnect with our source, the grace to live, endure, and flourish returns.
Song
Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Abide with me – Henry Francis Lyte
Prayer – Father, thank You for being the source of our life and strength. Forgive me for the times I drift away and try to live in my own strength. Draw me closer to You and help me remain connected to You every day. May my life flourish as I abide in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
