Give us help from trouble, For the help of man is useless.”
Psalm 60:11 (NKJV)

There is an order to the way help works in God’s kingdom. God helps first, then people can help.

In 2 Kings 6, two women in Samaria found themselves in dire circumstances due to an intense famine. When they cried out to the king, his answer carried unexpected wisdom:

“If the Lord does not help you, where can I find help for you?” (2 Kings 6:27).

The king understood something many people overlook: If God does not intervene first, even the best efforts of people will fall short.

Scripture gives us a beautiful example of this order in the life of David. God first spoke a word over David’s life—that he would become king. That promise came from heaven. After the word was given, something remarkable happened. The Bible says that people began to come day by day to help David, until he had a great army (1 Chronicles 12:22).

Notice the order. First, God spoke. Then people showed up.

The same pattern still works today. When God moves in a person’s life, He often sends people as instruments of His help. A mentor appears. A friend gives wise counsel. An opportunity opens. Doors that were locked suddenly swing wide.

If God does not move first, even the best efforts of people will fall short.

But the starting point is always the same: God moves first.

But many get the order wrong. They are searching for people to solve problems. Yet, Scripture gently reminds us to lift our eyes higher. If God does not put your help in the hands of a man, it would only lead to unmet expectations, and often disappointment, or even manipulation.

This is one of the reasons many get offended in men and in God because they have reversed the order – looking up to men rather than unto God, the true source of help.

When we seek Him first – through prayer, trust, and obedience – we position ourselves to receive the help He has already prepared. And often, that help arrives through people He sends along the way. And remember that God’s help, like His gifts have no sorrow attached.

Song

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:

all other ground is sinking sand;

all other ground is sinking sand.

My hope is built on nothing less– Edward Mote

Prayer – Father, teach us to seek Your help before looking to people. Remind us that every good and perfect help begins with You. Order our steps, guide our decisions, and send the right people into our lives at the right time. May we always trust in You first. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
