“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”
– Genesis 1:26 (KJV)
To truly understand who you are, you must return to where it all began—the Book of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings. In Genesis 1:26, God reveals not only His original plan for humanity but also the blueprint for your identity and purpose.
“Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion…”
Before Adam had a body, he had a spirit. Genesis 1 shows us that God created the spirit of man first—crafted in His very own image, filled with His likeness, and infused with dominion. The physical body came later in Genesis 2:7, formed from the dust and animated by the breath of God.
You are a spirit being. You have a soul (mind, will, and emotions), and you live in a body. But your spirit—the real you—is where God placed His power, presence, and authority. This is why Proverbs 20:27 (KJV) states, “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.”
When God declared, “Let them have dominion,” He wasn’t merely giving Adam a job—He was establishing a kingdom identity. That same dominion has been restored to us through Jesus, the second Adam. What Adam lost, Christ recovered. Now, as believers, we carry that divine dominion within our born-again spirit.
You are a spirit being. You have a soul (mind, will, and emotions), and you live in a body.
You cannot walk in authority if you don’t recognize that it has been given to you. You won’t see breakthroughs in life if you believe God is acting independently of you. God has chosen to work through you. Just as He brought animals to Adam to name, He brings opportunities to you—to speak, to act, and to release Kingdom power on earth.
Jesus said in John 6:63 (NKJV), “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”
That same spiritual power flows through your words when you speak in faith, in the name of Jesus, and from the place of knowing who you are in Him. Embrace your identity, walk in your authority, and release the extraordinary power of God in your life!

I Have Given You Authority
Song by Don Moen
Prayer – Father, thank You for creating me in Your image and giving me dominion through Christ. Help me live from my spirit, not my flesh. Teach me to exercise the authority You’ve placed in me—to speak life, to resist fear, and to walk in victory every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
