“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel.

Galatians 1:6 (KJV)

Paul’s words to the Galatians strike like lightning: “I marvel…” In modern terms, “I am shocked, astonished, bewildered!” Why? Because these believers, once firm in the grace of Christ, had unknowingly drifted into something else — another gospel.

The tragedy wasn’t that they chose to walk away — it’s that they didn’t even know they had. In their minds, they were still standing on the truth. But Paul, with the discernment of the Spirit, saw it clearly: “This is not it.”

This “other gospel” wasn’t openly heretical. It looked like the gospel. It sounded like the gospel. It probably had Scripture sprinkled all over it. But it wasn’t the true gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a substitute.

Paul’s language — “you are removed” — reveals something sobering: it wasn’t just a shift in message; it was a shift in relationship. To lose the gospel is to lose the grace of Christ Himself. Substitution is Satan’s strategy. And how does it happen?

“Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.” Matthew 13:25 (KJV)

Falsehood enters when vigilance sleeps.

To lose the gospel is to lose the grace of Christ Himself.

The enemy doesn’t need to uproot the wheat. He only needs to plant something that resembles it. Tares look like wheat — until it’s too late. The goal is confusion, corruption, and quiet compromise.

The Galatians didn’t switch fields. They were in the same church, under the same name, with the same songs. But what was growing was no longer the seed Paul had sown. The seeds had been shifted and substituted.

This devotional is a warning: don’t settle for a substitute gospel. The gospel of self-help, hype, or human effort is not the gospel of grace. Anything that replaces Christ as the center, even subtly, is another gospel.

How do we guard ourselves?

Stay rooted in the Word. The Word is your plumb line. If Jesus said “It is written,” then so must we.

Stay awake. The enemy sows while men sleep. Stay alert in your doctrine, in your devotion, and in your discernment.

Don’t assume proximity equals purity. Just because it’s in the church doesn’t mean it came from Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit for discernment.

Like Paul, we need the Spirit to reveal when something is off, even when everything looks right.

Word of God Speak

Song by Mercy Me

Prayer – Lord Jesus, help me never to trade Your truth for a counterfeit. Keep me awake, alert, and anchored in the pure gospel of Your grace. Let my heart burn for what is real, and give me the discernment to reject what only sounds spiritual. Let no other gospel take root in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
