“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
-Matthew 6:6 (NKJV)

Prayer is one of the most familiar Christian practices, yet also one of the most misunderstood. In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches us not just to pray, but to pray from the secret place—a place beyond performance, pressure, or protocol. This is the realm where transformation occurs, where divine power is stirred, and where heaven responds. True power in prayer is not measured by eloquence or repetition, but by sincerity, humility, and depth of heart. When prayer springs from the secret place, it becomes a demonstration of the Spirit and power.

Jesus contrasts two types of prayer: public displays for recognition versus intimate communion with the Father. He was not condemning public prayer, but the motive behind it. Many people pray to be seen, admired, or validated. But Jesus points us to a hidden space—a space where the Father is already present, waiting to meet us in truth. The closet Jesus speaks of is not just a physical room; it represents intentional focus, undistracted presence, and undivided attention. It’s all distractions are set aside, and your soul is quiet enough to hear God whisper.

True power in prayer is not measured by eloquence or repetition, but by sincerity, humility, and depth of heart.

Jesus Himself modelled this. In Gethsemane, He withdrew, knelt in agony, and prayed—not to be seen, but to align with the Father’s will. From that hidden struggle came the strength to endure the cross. Real spiritual authority is born in private submission.

Prayer is not a transaction; it’s a transfer—of burden, fear, pain, worship, and trust. The secret place is where we hand over our cares and receive God’s peace, where we trade weakness for strength and logic for revelation. If you’ve been praying and seeing no results, ask yourself: Am I praying from the secret place? Am I still, surrendered, and seeking His heart? That’s the posture that unlocks open rewards. That’s the kind of prayer God answers with demonstration and power.

In Your Presence… That’s where I am strong

Paul Wilbur

Prayer – Father, teach me to pray from the secret place. Strip away performance and pride. Draw me into communion where only You and I meet. Let my heart be the altar, and my words be true. Revive my prayer life with fire and intimacy. When I pray, let it not be a show—but a surrender. I long to see Your power revealed in my life through hidden devotion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
