“Then it came to pass, when the Lord was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.”
- 2 Kings 2:1 (NKJV)
Every believer’s journey into purpose passes through seasons – divine stations that shape character, deepen faith, and prepare us for destiny. In 2 Kings 2, Elisha followed Elijah through four significant places: Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and Jordan. Each represents a vital spiritual experience that every child of God must encounter to become all that God designed them to be.
1. Gilgal -The Place of Shame Removal
Gilgal was where Israel was circumcised a second time (Joshua 5:9). Here, God said, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Gilgal represents the place where the past is broken off where shame, guilt, and failure lose their power. Everyone who desires to fulfill purpose must first allow God to deal with their past. You cannot carry yesterday’s burdens into tomorrow’s destiny. Like Elisha, you must let God roll away reproach so you can move forward freely.
2. Bethel – The Place of Revelation
From Gilgal, they went to Bethel, the place where Jacob saw a ladder reaching into heaven and heard God speak personally to him. Bethel is where your relationship with God becomes intimate and personal. He ceases to be your parents’ God or your pastor’s God; He becomes your God. Until you have a personal encounter with Him, you cannot stand firmly in purpose. Bethel is the place where conviction is birthed and commitment is sealed. It’s where you say, “For this God, I will live.”
3. Jericho – The Place of Resistance
Their next stop was Jericho. Scripture says, “Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel” (Joshua 6:1). Jericho represents opposition – the walls that seem to stand between you and your promise. Here, your faith is tested, and your endurance is forged. Every believer will face Jericho moments, a delayed breakthrough, an unanswered prayer, a dream that seems out of reach. But Jericho’s walls always fall when faith and obedience work hand in hand.
4. Jordan – The Place of Power and Manifestation
Finally, they crossed the Jordan. There, Elijah struck the waters, and they parted before him. This was the moment of divine proof, the unveiling of spiritual authority. Jordan symbolizes manifestation, where preparation meets power, and purpose becomes visible. For Jesus too, the Jordan was where the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. At Jordan, God confirms His calling and releases empowerment for the assignment ahead.
Each of these places matters deeply.
Gilgal heals your past.
Bethel reveals your God.
Jericho strengthens your faith.
Jordan releases your power.
You can’t skip any step. If you skip Gilgal, shame will follow. If you skip Bethel, you’ll lack revelation. If you skip Jericho, your faith will remain weak. Only those who remain through all three arrive at Jordan ready to carry divine power with maturity and grace.
Your journey into purpose will take you through Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and Jordan. Each season has a lesson designed to prepare you for destiny. Don’t rush the process – let God finish His work in every stage. When you finally reach your Jordan, you will walk in His power with confidence, humility, and grace.

Take Me Deeper
By Don Moen
Prayer – Father, thank You for guiding me through the journey of purpose. Help me to overcome the shame of my past at Gilgal, encounter You deeply at Bethel, overcome resistance at Jericho, and walk in Your power at Jordan. Let every season fulfill its purpose in me until Your glory is revealed through my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
