“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
– Proverbs 22:1 (NKJV)
Your name is more than a label. In the spiritual realm, it is a fragrance. The meaning, history, and reputation tied to your name can open or close doors. Yet God is not limited by what your name has been; He can use your name to establish His glory.
Lazarus means the one whom God helps. His name preceded his resurrection story in John 11. Before Jesus ever stepped into Bethany, the name Lazarus already carried divine intent. That is the power of a name under divine covering. Song of Solomon 1:3 (NIV) says, “Your name is like perfume poured out.” A good name can attract favour just as a pleasing aroma draws people in. Your name can become a key, a résumé, a prophecy.
However, not everyone is born with a sweet name or a spotless legacy.
Consider this: What fragrance does your name release in rooms you are not in?
Mary and Martha, whose names stem from Miriam (meaning rebellion) still summoned Jesus. This shows that mercy can rewrite history. Even if your name carries pain, scandal, or generational baggage, God’s grace can transform it into honour. Jacob became Israel. Abram became Abraham. Saul became Paul. These were name changes initiated by heaven to align identity with destiny. Even if your literal name remains the same, God can change its impact.
Consider this: What fragrance does your name release in rooms you are not in? If your name were spoken in a meeting, would it invoke trust or suspicion? Would it bring calm or concern? Your actions, reputation, and alignment with God can sanctify your name. Where damage exists, surrender it to God. He delights in restoring dignity. God not only blesses individuals, He blesses names, families, and legacies.
Do not underestimate the power of your name. Cultivate integrity, faithfulness, and humility so your name becomes a sweet perfume. Where your name is weak, let God make it strong. When it is stained, let grace cleanse it. Above all, let your name be known in heaven.
Song of Worship
I’m working in power – 1x
I’m working miracles – 1x
I live a life of favour – 1x
I know who I am – 1x
Prayer
Father, I thank You for my name and the identity You have given me. Where my name has brought shame or dishonour, I ask for mercy and redemption. Let my name carry the fragrance of favour, integrity, and grace. May it open doors of opportunity and be respected in heaven and on earth. Align my name with Your purpose, and let it bring glory to You always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
