“And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.”
-1 Samuel 17:10, 11 (KJV)

Goliath stood tall – a giant not just in stature, but in intimidation. He didn’t whisper threats; he shouted them across the valley for all of Israel to hear. He wasn’t just challenging Israel – he was mocking their God, their covenant, and their identity.

And what was the response from Saul, the king, and Israel, the chosen people? Dismay and fear.

Not silence. Not strategy. Just fear.

Yet, these were covenant people. They had the promises of God. They had the ark. They had a history with God’s power. So why the paralysis?

The answer is piercing – they had the position, but not the capacity.

It is one thing to belong to the Body of Christ. It is another thing entirely to carry spiritual capacity – the stature, substance, and readiness in the spirit to respond when darkness roars.

The Israelite army could all see Goliath, but that wasn’t the issue. They even repeated his words: “Have you seen this man?” They echoed his threat, gave voice to his taunt, and analyzed his size. This is how fear spreads: when we meditate more on the threat than the truth. When we know the promise but lack the inner posture to act on it.

It is one thing to belong to the Body of Christ. It is another thing entirely to carry spiritual capacity – the stature, substance, and readiness in the spirit to respond when darkness roars.

There was even a reward attached to slaying Goliath – wealth, royalty, and exemption. But incentives mean nothing when courage is absent. It’s not that they didn’t know the reward. They simply didn’t have the faith-filled strength to rise up and claim it.

We live in a world that throws modern-day Goliaths at us – disease, wickedness, despair, cultural decay. And like Israel, we can be tempted to rehearse the problem instead of declaring the promise. But the kingdom of God doesn’t just need members – it needs men and women of capacity.

Capacity is not about being loud. It is about being rooted. It is not about being many, it is about being ready.

Take You At Your Word

Song by Cody Carnes

Prayer – Lord, build in me spiritual capacity. Not just knowledge, but courage. Not just church attendance, but consecration. Let me not fear when the enemy shouts. Let me not freeze when giants stand tall. Give me the inner strength to stand, speak, and act in faith, no matter the size of the challenge. Amen.
