“You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways”.
– Job 22:28 (NKJV)
Vehicle owners know the importance of maintaining a vehicle to ensure it remains in excellent condition – be it replacing windshield wipers, changing tires, or even the simple task of topping up windshield wiper fluid. All these actions are considered patches, quick and easy fixes to keep your car running well.
Just like a car, computer or phone needs those patches or software updates to prevent crashes, we also need regular maintenance in our lives to enjoy dominion (Job 22:28). This devotional helps us discover some practical “patches” we can apply to our lives to walk in that dominion that God has given us.
The first thing we must do is to schedule regular patching in our lives. We do this by consistently and continually engaging with the word of God. When we declare His Word and His promises, we release its truth and power over our lives. In practical terms, we must identify the areas in our lives that are not functioning as they should and search for Bible verses to address them.
In Numbers 13 and 14, when the Israelites were facing a go-or-no-go situation, Joshua and Caleb boldly declared that they could possess the land with the help of God. This confidence came because they had internalized every promise that God had made to the Israelites. To them, God’s words was enough to face the giants without fear. Our faith in God will only grow, by continuously exposing ourselves to His word (Romans 10:17).
Just as you would schedule a car maintenance when you hear a strange noise, you must also act quickly to apply a spiritual fix.
Another thing to be mindful of is that we must develop “Word reserves”. The psalmist says, “Your words have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). Just as you might keep extra engine oil, jumper cables, or a spare tire in your car, that is how we must store up Scripture for when the unexpected happens. Joshua 1:8 commands us not to let God’s word depart from our mouths, and to meditate on it day and night. Luke 6:45 reminds us “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” – be sure you’re filling your heart with God’s Word so that when you need to declare something, it’s His Word that flows out.
Finally, when you notice a threat or something unusual happening, do not ignore it. Just as you would schedule a car maintenance when you hear a strange noise, you must also act quickly to apply a spiritual fix. Do not allow negative thoughts or words to linger – silence them with the Word of God remembering to “take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10b). Declare His promises and truth over the situation and shut down the lies of the enemy. Ephesians 6:17 commands us to take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted in Matthew 4:1-11, He responded with Scripture and said, “It is written”.
What will your own “It is written” declaration be today? Decree and declare it—God will establish it for you.
