“Before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground.”Genesis 2:5 (NKJV)
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”Genesis 2:15 (ESV)

When God created humankind in His image (Genesis 1:26–27), He released the dominion mandate—a blessing that included fruitfulness, multiplication, and dominion (Genesis 1:28). Yet this divine blessing required human participation for manifestation. The potential for abundance existed in creation, but nothing would grow until man began to work and God released the rain.

Genesis 2:5 reveals a striking truth: “The Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground.” Though the plants were created in Genesis 1:11, they had not yet manifested because there was no worker to till the soil. The blessing waited for work, and work waited for blessing. The two are inseparable.

Work Invites the Rain of Blessing

In Scripture, rain represents divine blessing. Deuteronomy 28:12 declares, “The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand.” Notice that God’s blessing is attached to the work of our hands.

God sometimes withholds rain—not as punishment, but as preparation. He waits for us to rise, take responsibility, and begin the work He has assigned. Once we do, His rain falls, activating the fruitfulness He ordained from the beginning. Many breakthroughs await the moment we step into obedience and diligence.

Work, therefore, is not separate from grace; it is the platform through which grace manifests. As believers, we must engage actively, knowing that the rain of God’s blessing meets us in the field of faithful work.

Work Produces Multiplication

God placed man in the Garden “to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Every aspect of the dominion mandate—fruitfulness, multiplication, subduing, and dominion—requires work combined with God’s blessing. When rain meets effort, results appear.

Proverbs 14:23 (NIV) reminds us, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Likewise, in Matthew 25:14–30, the servants who worked multiplied what they were given, but the one who did nothing lost his reward. The principle is timeless: God blesses what we do, not what we merely intend.

Work is the soil in which divine promises grow. Through it, we partner with God to bring forth visible fruit from invisible potential.

Song of Worship:
There shall be showers of blessing;
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Saviour above.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need;
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead!

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank You for the revelation of work and the promise of Your rain. Bless the work of our hands and cause Your showers to bring fruitfulness, increase, and dominion in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
