“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”Genesis 1:28

Work is not just an activity; it is a calling. Within God’s dominion mandate in Genesis 1:28, we find the divine link between purpose and productivity. To be fruitful requires work. To multiply requires work. To fill and subdue the earth requires work. To have dominion requires work. God designed work as the channel through which His blessings are revealed on earth. Understanding God’s glory in work helps us align our daily labour with divine purpose.

Work Reflects God’s Glory

Work reveals the character and excellence of the worker. The quality, consistency, and timeliness of what we produce speak volumes about who we are and whose image we carry. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” (Psalm 19:1). All creation testifies to the splendour and perfection of God’s workmanship.

In the same way, when we work with diligence and excellence, we mirror the Creator and display God’s glory in work.Work, therefore, is a form of worship. It is through faithful, excellent work that we glorify God and manifest His nature to the world around us. Every task—whether great or small—can become a testimony of His glory when done with a heart of purpose and integrity.

Work Brings Recognition and Access

God uses work as a pathway to visibility and honour. David’s work in defeating Goliath brought recognition before kings (1 Samuel 17:55–58). His courage and excellence distinguished him, and his name became known throughout Israel (1 Samuel 18:7). When we commit to excellence, God causes our work to speak on our behalf.

Work also grants access to provision and abundance. In Genesis 2:8–15, Adam’s assignment in the Garden positioned him amidst great resources—gold, onyx, and rivers of life. God placed him there to work and maintain it (Genesis 2:15). The principle remains the same today: when we engage faithfully in the work God assigns, He opens access to the wealth and opportunities within that environment.

Ultimately, our work provides what sustains life—a place to dwell, food to eat, and relationships that flourish (Genesis 2:8, 16, 22). Work was never meant to be a curse; it is the means through which God’s blessings are experienced and extended to others.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of work and the chance to reveal Your glory through it. Teach us to serve with excellence and integrity, knowing that our labour is worship before You. Bless the work of our hands, open doors of favour, and let every effort reflect Your beauty and purpose. May our diligence draw others to Your light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
