“And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Luke 1:17 (KJV)

The Bible is clear: John the Baptist was born for a purpose. Before he took his first breath, his destiny was set — to go before the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah” (Luke 1:17). God equipped him with the anointing, boldness, and authority to call a nation back to Himself.

But what exactly was his mission?

To turn hearts.

To turn the hearts of fathers toward their children.

To bring the disobedient back to the wisdom of the righteous.

And above all, to prepare a people ready for the Lord.

John’s ministry wasn’t about entertaining crowds or building his own name. It was about repairing what sin had shattered — the family, the nation, and humanity’s relationship with God.

At that time, family life was fractured. People had drifted far from God, living in rebellion and spiritual blindness. Israel – God’s covenant people – had backslidden. For about 400 years, between the prophecy of Malachi and the Gospel of Matthew, heaven seemed silent: no prophet, no fresh vision, no living word from the Lord.

The call has not changed.

But God had not abandoned His plan. And into that silence, John stepped. His message was simple, yet it cut to the heart:

Repent. Return. Prepare.

He called people to turn from sin and reconnect with their Creator. He challenged fathers to take responsibility, children to walk in obedience, and families to realign with God’s design.

Scripture reminds us:

“For this reason, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.”  (Ephesians 3:14–15)

From the very beginning, God established the family as the foundation of a flourishing society. In Genesis 2:18 (KJV), He declared: “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

John’s story shows us God’s heart: He values the family deeply. He sends voices to heal what is broken, to mend divisions, to rekindle love, and to bring hearts together under His authority.

The call has not changed.

Fathers – turn your hearts toward your children.

Children – choose honor, respect, and love.

Families – put God back at the center.

When the home is restored, the way is prepared for the Lord to come in power – just as John prepared the way for Jesus.

Come, Let Us Return to the Lord

By Matt Boswell, Cochren and Co., Matt Papa

Prayer – Father, thank You for not abandoning us in silence. Restore hearts in my family, my generation, and my nation. Turn us back to You and prepare us for the coming of the Lord. Let the spirit and power of Elijah bring healing, repentance, and unity — all for Your glory.
