Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”
- Genesis 2:15 (NKJV)

Work is the deployment of our resources, time, effort, and skills into a venture to produce a valuable outcome, whether a product or a service. Work is one of the pathways God uses to promote His people. Promotion rests on the foundation of work.

In Genesis 41:37–41, Joseph was appointed Prime Minister because of the solution he provided and the value it added to Pharaoh’s leadership at that time. If we ever reach a point where promotion seems distant, it is wise to examine the weight of the value and solutions we bring to the table. Within today’s context, value can be real or perceived.

So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.  – Genesis 41:37 (NKJV)

Pharaoh and his servants recognized great value in Joseph, and that perception opened the door to his promotion. Many people work hard and deliver results, yet their value is not visible to those who matter.

Think of a typical office setting. Two employees might complete the same project with equal effort, but one takes the extra step to present it clearly, communicate progress, and connect their work to the team’s goals. While both added value, the one who makes it visible is more likely to be recognized. In the same way, perceived value often determines the speed of promotion. May the Lord make our work valuable in the eyes of those who have influence over our lifting.

Being a people of excellence means we must constantly add value wherever we are. Joseph consistently added value in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39), in prison, and even earlier when he served his father faithfully by bringing honest reports.

Promotion rests on the foundation of work.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men. – Proverbs 22:29 (KJV)

According to Ephesians 2:10, Scripture says, “We are His workmanship,” and it is expected that we produce excellent work. In Genesis 1:2, when the earth was without form, the Spirit of God went into action to restore order according to God’s plan. The same applies to us. Whatever in our lives seems out of place is calling for work.

If marriage is in trouble, it is calling for work. If finances are strained, it is a call to work. After prayer, we must put our hands to work.

In John 5:17, Jesus said, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” If even the Father is still working, we have no excuse to remain idle. Whether it is a career, a marriage, a relationship, or a business, effort must be applied. Raising godly children also requires deliberate work, especially in a world that competes for their time, attention, and minds.

As we apply this principle of diligent work today, may God cause men to see value in our efforts and grant us promotion in Jesus’ name.
