‘And he withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed. ‘

Luke 5:16 (KJV)

Jesus Christ, God the Son, walked the earth with quiet power and deep humility. Though fully divine, He chose not to draw attention to Himself. In this devotional, we reflect on the humble nature of Jesus—one of His characteristics—and how His quiet confidence challenges us to examine the motives behind our actions. If you are tempted to seek recognition or approval from others, Jesus invites you to walk a different path, the path of humility.

In John 7:4 NIV, even those closest to Jesus struggled to understand His refusal to promote Himself – “No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world” .

His own family urged Him to be more public, more vocal about His works but Jesus resisted. He embodied humility, never seeking public applause. The Spirit of Christ is humble, quiet, and content to let God be glorified. And as believers, we have the spirit of Christ so we too should emulate this nature of God the Son.

Time and again, Jesus chose solitude over self-promotion.

Jesus’ ministry was filled with miracles, yet He consistently deflected the spotlight. After healing a demon-possessed man in Mark 5:19 NIV, “Jesus did not let him [follow], but said, ‘Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.’” Jesus didn’t encourage a campaign about Himself. He wanted to point people to God the Father and not to Himself.

The Bible has records of several instances when Jesus hid himself sometimes to pray after performing great miracles –“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16). After feeding five thousand people, He did not linger in the limelight. “After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray” (Matthew 14:23). Time and again, Jesus chose solitude over self-promotion. His goal was never personal fame but was rather always the glory of the Father.

So how do we live like Jesus in a world that celebrates self-promotion? We pause. We check our motives. We ask: Am I doing this for applause, or to glorify God? The Spirit of Christ in us nudges us away from pride and toward purpose. We can serve powerfully without demanding attention. When we live solely to glorify God, we exemplify the nature of Jesus Christ.

Today, take a moment to ask God to purify your motives. Whatever your role at home, work, or ministry, choose humility. Let your actions point others to God, not yourself.

Song of Worship

I’m desperate for You

Song by Michael W Smith

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for showing me what true humility looks like. I confess that sometimes I crave attention or recognition. But today, I choose Your way – the way of quiet obedience. Help me live for Your glory alone. May my life reflect You, not just me. In Your name, Amen.
