“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
Matthew 6:6 (KJV)
In our walk with God, there are many outward acts we participate in. These may come in the form of giving, praying, fasting, worshiping, the list goes on. These are all powerful and necessary expressions of faith. But Jesus draws our attention to something deeper, something invisible to people but always visible to God: The Secret Place.
Jesus makes a bold and clarifying statement: “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” But what does God see in secret? This devotional will venture beyond outward expressions of faith and step into the sacred, unseen place where God meets the heart. It’s not the size of your offering, nor the length of your prayers. It’s not the eloquence of your words or the extravagance of your sacrifice; God is looking at your heart. The Secret Place is not necessarily defined by physical solitude; it is defined by spiritual surrender.
The Secret Place is the heart’s posture:
Take the example of Abraham. God asked him to offer Isaac, his only son, the child of promise. That request must have been crushing, yet Abraham obeyed. For three days he journeyed in silence, wrestling in his mind. But by the time he raised the knife, his heart had reached a place of complete surrender. In that moment, God interrupted: “Now I know that you fear God.” Genesis 22:12 Notice—God stopped the act. Why? Because He had already seen what He was looking for: a heart fully yielded. The act was no longer necessary; the reward had already been released.
Giving and praying from the Secret Place:
Jesus teaches us that when we give or pray, it must be from the Secret Place. Not just physically hidden but internally purified. It is possible to give publicly and still be in the Secret Place, like the woman with the alabaster box. It’s also possible to give privately and not be there at all, like Ananias and Sapphira. The difference? The state of the heart.
What God rewards:
We often think God rewards giving and prayer. But Jesus corrects this idea:” He will reward what He sees in secret.” That means He rewards what is behind your giving, what motivates your prayers, and what fuels your worship. Acts do not manipulate God, He is moved by authentic love, reverence, and surrender. The Secret Place is the hidden realm of your soul where motives are laid bare. It is the realm where God sees truth, intent, and devotion.
Beloved, if you want to see open reward from God, don’t just polish your public life. Cultivate your Secret Place. The closet is where you shut the world out; the Secret Place is where God steps in. Bring your offerings, bring your prayers, but most of all, bring your heart.
Let your giving rise from surrender. Let your prayers flow from love. Let your worship be steeped in reverence. Because when God sees you in secret, He will reward you openly.

Prayer – Abba Father, draw me into the Secret Place. Purify my motives and align my heart with Yours. Let my giving, my praying, and my worship flow from true surrender. Search me and know me—and reward what You find pleasing in the hidden parts of me. In Jesus’ name, Amen
