But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.’”
– John 5:17 NKJV

From the very beginning, God revealed Himself through work. He created the heavens and the earth, carefully forming light, land, and life. Work was never a punishment or an afterthought; it was the expression of God’s Spirit. Since we are made in His image, work is also the expression of our own spiritual identity.

God is Spirit, and one of the ways His Spirit is revealed is through creation. Genesis 1:1 declares, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” His work was the evidence of His presence. In the same way, our work is not just physical labor; it is spiritual expression. When we engage in productive, purposeful work, we manifest the nature of God within us.

Psalm 90:17 connects the dots between favor and work: “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.” Favor does not rest on idleness. It rests on diligent hands that align with God’s design. Work becomes the platform where divine favor operates, and without it, there is little for God to bless or establish.

Work is not just what we do; it is who we are as spirit beings created in God’s image.

This means we must begin to see work as worship. Work is not separate from our spiritual life; it is an extension of it. Whether in school, career, business, or family responsibilities, when we work diligently and with integrity, we glorify God. Colossians 3:23 reminds us to “work heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” In addition, we must invite God’s favor into our work. Before starting each task, pause to ask God to bless it. Name your work, pray over it, and commit it into His hands. Just as God looked at His creation and declared it good, we can dedicate our work to Him and expect His favor to rest upon it.

Work is not just what we do; it is who we are as spirit beings created in God’s image. When we embrace this truth, our work becomes a channel for God’s favor and a testimony of His nature within us.

Song of Worship:  Lord, I Offer My Life to You” by Don Moen

Prayer – Father, thank You for making me in Your image. Help me to see work as an expression of my spiritual nature. Let the favor of the Lord establish the work of my hands today and always, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
