“For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice…”
-Genesis 18:19 (ESV)
Teaching and learning mean a great deal to God. In Proverbs 6:6, the Bible says, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise” (NIV). God invites us to study the world around us. He desires that we observe and gain wisdom from even the smallest creatures. The ant teaches diligence without saying a word. In the same way, our lives constantly teach others, whether we realize it or not.
Teaching, then, is best done through the way we live. It is not only about the lessons we declare but also the lifestyle we exemplify. In the kingdom of God, learning flows from life to life. People often learn more from what we model than from what we say.
Genesis 18:19 reveals one of the key reasons God chose Abraham: he would teach his household to walk in righteousness and justice. Abraham was entrusted with a legacy. In the same way, we are called to teach and influence those who look up to us, through a lifestyle that reflects godliness, love, and truth. This begins in the home. The most powerful classroom is not a lecture room or even a church pulpit. It is the home. It is the living room, the dinner table, the quiet moments between husband, wife, and children.
You cannot teach what you do not live.
Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. He does so sacrificially, faithfully, and tenderly. Love should not only be taught in words; it must also be visible. A father who loves well becomes the first example of Christ to his children. A son learns how to treat women by watching how his father treats his mother. A daughter begins to understand what love should look like by observing how her father honors and cares for her mother.
Teaching within the family extends your influence beyond your years, but you cannot teach what you do not live. That’s why observation is crucial. Pay attention to your actions and the lessons your life is preaching. When you fall short, repent. God is calling you to be a steward of knowledge and a demonstrator of Christlikeness.
Take time today to reflect: What am I actively teaching those who watch my life? What legacy of love and wisdom will outlive me?
